YOGA BLOCKS

So, how many yoga blocks do I need? It’s a common question we hear in the studio and online. Yoga blocks are perhaps the most useful prop you can buy to enhance your yoga practice. Although not a must, yoga blocks can help you execute poses that are too hard for you in the beginning as well as conquer new challenging ones once you’re experienced enough. These props can also prevent injuries as they usually make it easier to practice physical postures. So, if you already have an injury or some physical limitations, using blocks can help you carry out safe and effective yoga sessions without reaching risky limits. Now, to answer the question is merely a matter of personal choice. One would suffice, but two would be ideal! Certain poses require just one brick, whereas poses wherein both of your limbs are used may require two bricks instead of one.

Experienced practitioners can very well use just one block for most purposes. Beginners may need a pair to get used to the postures while slowly advancing from 2 to 1 to no blocks at all. The point is that a couple of yoga blocks will get the job done for you until you can learn to do that on your own.

With that being said, let’s find out some more about this versatile prop.

What are Yoga Blocks?

Also known as yoga bricks, yoga blocks are usually rectangular brick shaped pieces of equipment made of sturdy material such as wood, cork, foam or bamboo.

Ever seen that load of colorful bricks laying around in modern yoga studios?

Yeah, well those are yoga blocks, made popular by BKS Iyengar (founder of Iyengar yoga) in 1970s when yoga went mainstream. The aim of these props was to make asanas or poses more accessible to everyone while reducing the risks of injury.

But apart from its initial motive, yoga blocks serve many other purposes to make sure that your yoga practice is safe and sound. Let’s check them out.

Benefits of Yoga Bricks

  1. Improves accessibility by adding length to your limbs. For instance, if you can’t touch your toes in a forward bend, you can place the blocks in front and touch them instead so as to ease up the tension and pain. After-all, the most important function of yoga blocks is to reduce the distance between you and your destination to make the poses easier and within your reach.
  1. Prevents injury, for example, thanks to its raised surface it will make it easier for you to reach down without curving your back which is a big NO, be it any type of exercise.
  1. Provides additional support and balance
  2. Allows proper body alignment
  3. Increases the sense of awareness
  4. Activates muscles and adds more challenge

With advantages such as these, it wouldn’t be harmful to keep a couple of yoga blocks handy as it will only allow you to access and experience many essential yoga poses to their full capacity.

But remember, at the end of the day, the purpose of yoga blocks is to make your yoga practice easy and fluid. So, don’t get too used to it! Yoga is a prop less and equipment free system of exercises and that’s what your goal should be, to be gradually be able to practice yoga poses in a smooth and continuous fashion without needing a whole lot of tools. With that being said, let’s see what you should look for when buying a set of yoga blocks for yourself.

What to look for when buying yoga blocks?

Yoga blocks come in various shapes, sizes, colors and material. Size being the most important of them all since those gives you the desired distance and height to the ground and material being second in importance. Let’s take a closer look.

  1. What size of yoga blocks should I get?

Yoga blocks mostly come in 3 sizes- 3’’, 4’’ and 5’’. But choosing the right one depends entirely on your own height. So, if you’re a tall person, you should get a couple of 5 inches blocks. If you’re rather small, you can go for 3’’ instead, and 4’’ for if you have an average stature.

  1. What are the different types of yoga blocks?

There are 3 typical types of yoga blocks you can find- cork made, wooden/ bamboo and foam made.

I’d suggest you buy cork made or wooden as they’re both eco-friendly as well as long-lasting. Although a little heavy and maybe difficult to carry, these blocks are perfect for regular use as they give you the best friction, grip and stability to perform physical asanas. Here’s what I recommend.

Foam made yoga blocks on the other hand are quite lightweight and cheaper but not that eco-friendly. Moreover, they may not be as firm as cork or bamboo, since many yogis fear that they may collapse upon full pressure of the body weight. (This may not be entirely true.)

Here’s my favorite pick I can vouch for without a second thought- AmazonBasics Set of 2 Yoga Blocks.

Imagine being able to practice yoga with better support, balance, and alignment, all the while getting full access to poses! Well, that’s what you can do by including yoga blocks into your yoga routine.
